How Charging Your EV Has Become More Accessible

Two of the biggest electric charging companies in the country formed an agreement to share software with one another to make electric vehicle charging more accessible.

Electrify America, the Volkswagen owned subsidiary that plans on spending $2 billion on zero emission vehicle infrastructure over the next 10 years, and ChargePoint, a private company with more than 65,000 charging stations across the United States, agreed on a deal that will allow users of one network to use the other, without having to also join that network in a partnership that’s slated to begin later this year.

With all the different companies that provide EV charging across the country, the issue of being forced to pick one provider – or possibly having to subscribe to more than one – has been an issue for EV drivers. EVgo, ChargePoint, Tesla’s Supercharger network and Electrify America are just a few on the ever-growing list of charging providers in the states.

“With the two largest EV charging service providers in the U.S. reaching this agreement, we can help expedite electric vehicle adoption by creating a seamless and reliable charging experience for consumers,” said Giovanni Palazzo, president and CEO of Electrify America said in a press release. “By connecting our public charging networks, we increase the convenience and accessibility EV drivers need to travel where they want, when they want.”

According to the press release from Electrify America, they believe “agreements between Electrify America, ChargePoint and other charging companies are key to expanding access to electric vehicle charging nationwide, as a wave of new electric vehicles are expected to hit the market in the coming years.” The hope is that deals like this one will make using an EV easier than ever and permanently eliminate reservations buyers might have like range anxiety.

Luckily for EV drivers, interoperability alliances like this are becoming more popular – this isn’t the first time either of these companies have reached interoperability agreements, but it is the largest. In October of last year, InsideEVs reported that Electrify America partnered with EV Connect, Greenlots, and SemaConnect.

According to the press release, the agreement will connect more than 30,000 level 2 and DC fast chargers across the country from both Electrify America and ChargePoint.
